The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) and the CARICOM Private Sector Organization (CPSO) have launched the AgriMSE Business Development and Regional Market Integration Project. The initiative addresses intraregional market barriers affecting small agricultural enterprises across the Lesser Antilles.
The economic objective is to reduce the Caribbean's extra-regional food import bill by integrating localized agricultural producers into regional hospitality and retail supply chains. Micro and small agricultural enterprises frequently face non-tariff barriers and inconsistent logistics networks that prevent efficient cross-border trade. By deploying targeted capital and operational support, the project aims to stabilize supply volumes and standardize product quality across the CARICOM Single Market and Economy framework.
The development operates within the Agriculture & Food and Trade & Export Councils sectors, with initial implementations focusing on Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Trinidad and Tobago. The Caribbean Development Bank provides primary funding, with execution support from IICA and the CPSO. The project leverages commercial infrastructure to mobilize private investment into food processing and packaging facilities. Operational indicators target the expansion of market access metrics for smallholders through standardized phytosanitary compliance.
The structured regional rollout opens precise commercial options for businesses. Cold-chain logistics operators can secure contracts to transport temperature-sensitive agricultural commodities between member states. Packaging manufacturers can design and supply compliant, standardized biodegradable containers to regional food processors. Agri-tech providers can deploy cloud-based inventory and supply-matching platforms to link rural cooperatives directly with international resort purchasers. Professional compliance firms can offer technical training services to certify smallholders under international food safety and phytosanitary protocols.
