An African citizen attempting to travel across the continent faces, on average, visa requirements in more than half the countries they wish to visit. This stands in stark contrast to the European Union, where freedom of movement is a fundamental right. The African Union's Agenda 2063 envisions an Africa Passport that would enable free movement for all 1.4 billion Africans — but progress has been uneven.

Several regional economic communities, including ECOWAS in West Africa, have already achieved meaningful progress on intra-regional movement. The challenge now is to scale those successes continent-wide.
